Manual for Provenance Research in Germany is now available in English
The German Lost Art Foundation, in cooperation with Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung e. V., Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung und Restitution – Bibliotheken, Deutscher Bibliotheksverband e. V., Deutscher Museumsbund e. V., and ICOM Deutschland e. V. have published the “Provenance Research Manual to Identify Cultural Property Seized Due to Persecution During the National Socialist Era”. The English translation of the German “Leitfaden Provenienzforschung” is now available online.
The Manual is designed as a practice-oriented toolkit for employees of museums, libraries and archives, for arts and antiques dealers, and for private collectors, with the focus on research in Germany. Anyone who has doubts about the provenance of cultural property in their own holdings – whether paintings, sculptures, books, coins, porcelain, prints or silver cutlery – will find the necessary tools in the Manual: practical tips, case studies and all the important addresses, sources and Internet access.
The publication is divided into six chapters: The topics range from the historical context and ethical obligation, planning and methods of provenance research to the identification of heirs. The Manual conveys political, legal and ethical principles, but also provides information on institutions and networking within provenance research in Germany.
